Ask most aerial fitters and they will all say that indoor aerials — especially the set-top variety — are not especially effective for receiving digital television through Freeview. Indeed, many aerial suppliers do not stock a wide range of indoor aerials: whether you search amongst ‘aerial fitters Bristol,’ ‘aerials Sheffield’ or ‘aerials Edinburgh’ you will often find a small selection of indoor aerials amongst the welter of outdoor models supplied.

The major high street electrical stores may stock a few more than the aerial specialists, but the message is clear: indoor aerials are not whole heartedly recommended for digital reception. There again, what if you have no choice?

Indoor Considerations

It is worth pointing out there is no such thing as a ‘digital aerial.’ Your analogue model may work with digital equipment. What matters is that your aerial matches the frequency band of your local transmitter.

If you are just about to switch to digital from analogue, then the type of reception you receive (or received) via your analogue television equipment is an indicator as to whether an indoor aerial will be effective. If your picture was clear on all channels and in all weather conditions, then there is a reasonable chance the same aerial will work with digital. If, however, your analogue picture is/was poor at times — or all of the time — then it is unlikely to improve with digital.

First, check how close you are to your nearest transmitter. You can do this via the Wolfsbane online checker, and this will tell you how close you are and what type of aerial is the minimum required to obtain a good digital signal. This is arbitrary though: it may still depend on ‘line of sight’ aspects such as hills, trees and so forth between you and the transmitter.

You can try an upgraded set top aerial. If you do, you should seek reassurance from the supplier that you can return it if it does not provide a satisfactory signal. Experiment with placement — siting it a little higher could make all the difference. You may be advised to try a booster amplifier with he aerial: again, try one with the proviso you can return it if it is not effective. Be aware that aerial amplifiers can actually degrade the signal due to adding ‘noise,’ especially if the filtering is poor.
If you are using a set-top aerial but have a loft space, then a loft aerial is a useful improvement. An aerial similar to a roof mounted one can be installed (subject to space), and — used in conjunction with some good quality aerial to TV cabling — improves your chances of a good signal.

Waiting for Upgraded Transmitters/Full Digital Switchover

If no indoor aerial will work and an outdoor installation is not possible, then one option is to wait until the digital switchover is fully complete. Even in areas receiving digital television, there are still forthcoming dates where the transmitters are being altered either by having their signal strength boosted or being re-tuned (or both). Depending on your specific region, signal quality may improve when the work is completed.

Your carpet is a valuable household furnishing that should be treated with care. If however, you happen to get stains on your carpet, you can clean them in an environment-friendly way that does not harm your carpet, and more importantly protects your household.
Most of the commercial carpet cleaners available on the market are usually composed of harmful caustic substances, as well as chlorine and petroleum-bas¬ed solvents. Eco-friendly carpet cleaners on the other hand, minimise the harmful effects of harsh chemicals on your family and pets, and also prevent long-term damage.

While several carpet cleaners on the market claim to be eco-friendly and are quite expensive, that are many household stains that can effectively and inexpensively removed with easily available natural products. Follow the easy guidelines below to rid your carpet or rug of stubborn stains.

Vinegar wipes out most stains naturally

From tackling mild or deep set stains from wine, pet urine, glue and crayon, vinegar works wonders to thoroughly wipe off these stains from your carpet. Depending on the type of stain, you can use a vinegar-water solution on its own or in combination with other eco-friendly cleaning products.

If you have pet urine stains on your carpet, pour a little undiluted white vinegar over the affected area. Blot out excess liquid with a clean towel. Keep repeating the procedure until all the discolouration disappears. For glue, chewing gum and crayon stains dip an old toothbrush in vinegar and gently scrub the stained area. If the chewing gum stain doesn’t come out easily, warm the vinegar slightly, pat it on the affected area and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Gently scrape away the glue and remove residual deposits with a vinegar and water solution.

Rugs that experience liquid spills are prone to mildew growing between the fibres if they don’t properly dry. Destroy mildew by applying an equal quantity of undiluted vinegar solution to the affected area on the carpet. Allow the carpet to dry completely, and set the carpet out in the sun to warm up. If you cannot place the carpet in the sun, run a hair dryer at a very low setting on the affected area, until it completely dries out.

Nothing to whine about red wine stains

Nip fresh red wine stains in the bud by acting quickly. Liberally sprinkle salt on a red wine spill and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. The salt will absorb the spill and turn pink in colour. Brush or vacuum the salt away and clean the area with 1/3 cup vinegar and 2/3 cup water solution. Alternately you can pour a little white wine over the stained area and blot it out with a clean towel, repeating the process until the red wine stain vanishes.

Deep-seated carpet stains and stinks

Tough carpet stains such as grease and tar, and unpleasant carpet odours can be effectively tackled with baking soda and cornstarch. Address grease and tar stains by first sponging the area with an equal quantity of vinegar and water. Let it stand for a few minutes, following which you should sprinkle the area with cornstarch and vacuum. The cornstarch works by absorbing the stain away from the carpet and makes it easy to lift the grease off of your rug.

Deodorize smelly rugs by mixing bicarbonate of soda or cornstarch with some potpourri all over your carpet and leave overnight. Vacuum the carpet clean in the morning, to experience your carpet giving off a pleasant scent.

What more can you expect than pure pleasure from QuickStep, the market leader in high-quality laminate wood flooring. Premium quality and perfect finish blend in with a diverse choice of designs in an exceptional selection of colours and styles, to provide a natural look and feel, alongside optimal durability and functionality. With prices commencing at a cost-effective £7.99 per sq mtr., Quick-Step makes an ideal choice as an effective home improvement flooring solution.

Choice of stunning styles and sizes

Whether you prefer realistic wood, stone and ceramic floors, solid oak, beech, walnut or pine accents, you’re sure to meet your match for traditional or contemporary designs in the astonishingly authentic laminate floors from Quick-Step. You can take your pick from wide parquet style planks, small and large planks in single, double and three strip styles, wood and stone motifs that mirror nature in modern or rustic finishes. The realistic and palpable detail of this laminate flooring makes it quite difficult to distinguish from natural and other flooring options.

The ‘Perspective’ collection, a popular Quick-Step flooring range comprises of bevelled edges between the planks or on all the four sides of the planks, to create a unique effect that highlights each individual plank. The ‘Lagune’ selection is innovatively designed to resemble the floor of a ship deck. Its design includes a plastic strip in between the planks which makes it moisture-resistant, and suitable for use in bathrooms and areas with high moisture content. Created for use in kitchens, the ‘Quadra’ range of tile effect laminate floors are available in a variety of ceramic and stone finishes. These tiles however do not have the negative effects generally associated with normal ceramic tiles.

Revolutionary Uniclic glue-free flooring installation

All Quick-Step flooring solutions are easy to install without the need for glue. You can lay the floors in one click by simply clicking the planks together in place using the Uniclic locking system. Firm joints can be easily created by matching accessories in the same wood, mat or ceramic designs.

With the fitting of these laminate floors involving virtually no installation costs, and saving you time and money, Quick-Step serves as the perfect choice for any DIY flooring project.

Long-lasting scratch-resistant surfaces

With the passage of time and regular wear and tear most laminates tend to display signs of ageing in the form of scratches and marks. This not the case with Quick-Step flooring whose surface is treated with the innovative Scratch guard nano technology during the manufacture process, which makes it virtually impossible for these floors to wear out. This treated surface prevents the accumulation of dirt and is easy to clean and maintain.

Moreover, as a commitment to quality, all Quick-Step flooring is sold with a 25-year warranty, which further enhances their cost-effectiveness. Its resistance to mechanical damages, suitability in a wide array of applications including kitchens and highly moist environments such as bathrooms make Quick-Step an ideal option for homes of all types.

Before you even start painting exterior woodwork, you need to chose the right time of year to undertake the task. Early or late summer is probably the safest time of year, as there is less likelihood of rain (so the woodwork will be dry), and the sun is slightly less intense.

Here are tips to help you get the best results when painting exterior woodwork.

Before you even start to think about painting, you need to prepare your woodwork and get quality paint brushes. If there is any rotten wood, it will need to be replaced. You can remove small sections with a chisel and mallet, but you may need to saw out larger sections. Cut a new piece of wood to size, paint a wood preservative onto it and, once dry, screw and glue this into place.

If the woodwork has been previously painted, you will need to remove any flaking paint. The easiest way to do this is with adhesive paper and, if necessary, a scraper. Now sand down the woodwork to ensure that any blisters are smoothed over, and wash with warm soapy water to remove dirt and grease. If you have a large area to paint, it’s worth trying to find a random orbit sander. This will considerably speed up the sanding process!

Most wood will have natural knots in it. To stop these showing through the paintwork, you will need to apply knotting compound. This is a clear varnish.

Seal the remaining bare wood with an exterior primer or exterior woodstain.

When it comes to the actual painting of your exterior woodwork, do not try and save money by using interior gloss paints! They will not survive the temperatures outside, and will soon flake and split. This is obviously a real false economy.

Feel free to experiment with bright colours on woodwork, but do remember that you and your neighbours will have to live with it. Try and choose colours that complement the existing paint schemes in the neighbourhood.

Before applying any paint, apply an undercoat and allow this to dry. This will help to provide a smooth surface for the paint.

For larger areas of exterior woodwork, you can use gloss paint in a variety of colours. If it’s standard exterior gloss paint, you will need to apply two coats. Apply the paint vertically, working in the direction of the grain, and use sideways strokes to blend in the paint. If you are using a one-coat paint, apply it thickly in parallel strips. Do not over-brush; as the paint dries quickly, and lumpy effects can easily be accidentally achieved.

Some outdoor woodwork, such as hardwood doors, often look better with stains or varnishes rather than heavy gloss paint. This allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. There are a huge variety of exterior wood stains available, and they can be water, oil or spirit-based. They are applied directly to the wood with a clean brush or cloth, and are waterproof and extremely durable.

It is often better to get professional painters and decorator to assist. For skilled painters and decorators Liverpool or to find decorators Bristol or any other location, check your local directory.

Every once in a while, a house needs a thorough clean from top to bottom. This is traditionally known as a ‘spring clean’, as it was usually done in the Spring! cleaning a house from top to bottom is essential from time to time, to avoid a build up of dirt and accumulated debris in the home. Professional cleaners will come in and do a lot of the jobs for you, but there are some things that you can do yourself. Here are some tips from cleaning experts.

Don’t expect to be able to do an entire spring clean in a day. It could take a while to cover the entire house! It’s a good idea to start with a small room so you don’t feel too daunted. Take out everything that needs cleaning, and don’t forget about things like curtains or sofa covers.

Try not to be too sentimental about things, and get rid of items that are useless or are never used. Once everything is in piles, take an immediate trip to the tip and local charity shops to get rid of things before you change your mind. If you haven’t used something for more than a year, then you’re unlikely to ever use it, so get rid of it!

Cleaners recommend that you get your duvets dry cleaned, whilst many pillows, including feather ones, can go in the washing machine. Get these all done during a large spring clean.

In the kitchen, get rid of any old or broken pans and gadgets. Take everything out of the cupboards, and throw away any food that’s out of date. For cleaning your cupboards, try using soda crystals, which are very cheap, eco-friendly, and available from most supermarkets.

Cleaners would suggest that you don’t try and tackle more than two rooms a day during a spring clean. This is because you will be doing many jobs that you wouldn’t do in a normal cleaning session, and so it will take more time.

In the bathroom, clean your bath/shower, sink and toilet in the normal fashion. Dust the ceiling and corners, and then be sure to dust any vents or fans. You may need to use a gentle cleaner mixed with water to get fans really clean. Take down the light fixtures and clean, and then take down any blinds or curtains to have cleaned. Don’t forget to wash the floor!

Don’t forget the areas that you can’t see! This can be a particular problem in the living areas, where things like hi-fis and televisions can be a magnet for dust. Don’t forget to dust under photos and knick-knacks as well! And in the bedroom, make sure to vacuum under the bed.

It’s worth saving up and getting a carpet cleaning service in to give your carpets a professional clean. You’ll be amazed at the amount of dirt that they can get out with their professional equipment!

And finally, remember that spring-cleaning doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Break up the jobs between family members, and hire in professional cleaners who can offer professional cleaning techniques and who have expert cleaning machines for any jobs you don’t want to undertake. Then it will all go along very quickly!

Brabantia was launched in Holland in 1919 and is the market leader in home ware products such as waste bins, waste storage and food storage. You can choose from a wide range of products and select elegant waste bins and pedal bins to suit your interior design.
By selecting Brabantia bins of different colours, you can easily separate your waste into one for glassware, one for cardboard and one for plastics. Some Councils even provide biodegradable waste bags for waste food stuffs. Managing your waste has never been easier.

Brabantia bins are made of matt or brilliant steel and are extremely tough and durable. Waste bins are available in 30 litre, 40 litre and 50 litre sizes and have easy clean touch lids.

Oven cleaning is something that we’d all rather avoid if we can, but in reality it cannot be avoided and does need to be tackled every so often, unless you are one of the lucky people who have opted to have a self cleaning oven installed in your home.

Oven Cleaners Leeds / Edinburgh Cleaner / Cleaners in Liverpool

It is not essential that you do the oven cleaning yourself, as many domestic cleaners will offer oven cleaning as part of their service and so it means you can have more time for yourself, but if you don’t have the money for that, then you can do the oven cleaning yourself.

Leicester Cleaners / Cleaners Birmingham / Cleaner in Edinburgh

Before you consider doing your oven cleaning, you will need to buy the equipment and chemicals needed to do the task. Make sure that you buy a tough scourer, wire wool and a tough oven cleaning chemical which is made specifically to take burnt on dirt and grime.

One thing that you need to remember with oven cleaning is that it’s best to start at the top and slowly work your way down to the bottom. The reason for this is that particles from the top of the oven will fall down to the bottom, so if you do the bottom first you’ll have to do it again later.

Before you start, you’ll need to remove all of the knobs from the top of the cooker and soak them in hot soapy water while you continue on with the oven cleaning. Next, fill a large bowl with hot water and detergent, and place it in the centre of the bottom of the oven and close the door. The moisture will help to remove dirt later.

Now you should clean the exterior with a multi-purpose cleaner and a damp cloth. If you have any tough grime on the outside, use your scourer and a little elbow grease to scrub them out. Once you have removed the tough dirt, wipe down with your damp cloth. Then you can go back to the interior oven cleaning.

Remove the bowl of hot water from inside the oven, and spray your oven cleaner inside the oven, covering every inch. The instructions on the can will tell you how long to leave it for the best oven cleaning results. Leave for the specified amount of time and then come back to it after the time has passed.

Place some newspaper on the floor under the oven door to catch any bits of charred grime that fall out while you’re doing your oven cleaning. Now you can use your wire wool to scrub away the dirt and debris inside. Start at the top, and work your way slowly down. The oven cleaner should make most of the dirt quite easy to remove. Also clean the wire shelves.

Once you’ve cleaned it all out, use a damp sponge or cloth to wipe over the oven. This will get rid of any of the oven cleaner that remains and any last loose bits of dirt and grime. Wrap up the newspaper and throw it away. Then you can start on cleaning the knobs.

Finally, using a scrubbing brush to get into all the little nooks and crannies, scrub the knobs and then dry them off before placing them back on the cooker top.

The whole purpose of your roof is to protect the rest of the building, and it is essential that it is kept in good condition. Roofs are either flat or pitched, and the structure will determine what roofing materials are used. Tiles, metal, asphalt, shingles, thatch and earth sods are some of the materials which may be used when constructing a roof. The framework of a roof, whether it is flat or pitched, will generally be made of wood for residential properties. The roofs of industrial buildings are invariably made of steel and a usually flat, depending on the usage.

Roof Repairs Birmingham / Manchester Roofers / Edinburgh Roofer / Roofer in Derby

Roofing tiles can be made of slate, clay, wood or cement. Slate can be expensive but is very attractive when laid out. It is very heavy, and stronger walls may be necessary to support a slate roof. Slate tiles are durable, offer good fire protection and little maintenance. Clay tiles are long lasting and require little maintenance. They are available in a range of colours and types. The downside is that they are heavy and easily breakable which can be a problem when you need to walk on the roof during maintenance tasks. Wooden tiles require regular maintenance, and can suffer from mould and rot. Your insurance policy may not cover a wooden roof and it is advisable to check this point before installation. Wooden tiles look attractive, but may not last very long, so they can be an expensive option. Cement tiles are heavy but they are durable and fireproof. Many cement tiles are mixed with additives to make them lighter and more efficient.

Roofers Manchester / Glasgow Roofers / Roofers in Nottingham / Roofer Sheffield

There are many types of steel and steel cladding used in roofs. Zinc, copper and lead were very popular in the 1700s. Metal roofs are gaining popularity again for both domestic and industrial properties, as they are fire resistant and environmentally friendly in that they retain heat and are made from recyclable materials.

Asphalt has long been a favourite roofing material as it is cost effective and relatively easy to apply. It is usually used on flat roofs or those with a very slight slope, and covered with tiles or other roofing materials to improve its appearance.

Shingles and composite shingles are a popular choice for a roof covering. They are available in many colours and styles. Composite shingles are available in fibreglass and asphalt which are more expensive but are more durable, are easy to maintain and do not break when walked on.

Thatched roofing is very attractive and gives the chocolate box appearance to many villages in theUK. Thatch is very expensive and thatching is a dying art. Some insurance companies will not insure a thatched roof, and maintenance can be a problem.

Earth sods as a roofing material are becoming very popular as they also provide a degree of insulation to the property, making it very energy efficient. It will of course depend on the location of your property as to whether local planning will allow sods as a roofing material.

The type of material you use on your roof will depend very much on what is allowable in the area and the purpose of the building.

With so many different materials available for your flat roof today it is often difficult to decide which one is best for your roofing needs. Often people will base their decision on cost, however cheap doesn’t necessarily mean cheerful, especially when it comes to something as important as your roof. Roofing with fibreglass may not be the cheapest option on the market, but there are plenty of reasons why it is a great choice for your home.

Sheffield Roofers / Roofers Leeds / Liverpool Roofer / Roofing Nottingham

Fibreglass is a very tough material. Like all roofing materials it can be damaged due to lack of proper maintenance and weathering, but for the most part it provides strong and hard wearing protection to your home. Fibreglass roofing is also fairly easy to repair, unlike some other roofing materials, and it also makes a great base for tiles or an outside space (of course, this will depend on the support your house can offer the roof in question). Fibreglass can be quite an expensive option for your flat roof, but costs can be kept down as it is actually reasonably easy to do yourself – and for roofers it is a great alternative to felt roofing as it is applied cold and tends to perform better than other materials.

Roofers in Bristol / Roofer Leicester / Birmingham Roofers

As long as you are comfortable using a drill, saw (and you are comfortable with heights!) then it is possible to lay a fibreglass roof yourself. However, as with any project of this scale, if you are unsure you should consult a professional roofer. Even if it is simply for advice a roofer can be a great help to you and it is always best to be as informed as possible.

The process for preparing and laying a fibreglass roof is quite simple as long as you pay attention to the details. At its most basic, the first stage when laying your own fibreglass roof is to prepare the deck – you should check that the roof is dry and the roofing joists are not rotting. Then lay the decking: two rows of boards are needed in order to ensure a strong base. The next step is to fix the trim onto the roof, which can easily be done by stapling or nailing. Next you must prepare the deck for laminating; when preparing the resin, you will have to mix the resin with the catalyst – and it is essential that you get the percentages right as rectifying mistakes later is very difficult to do. When roofing with fibreglass, a chopped strand mat should be put down before laying the main laminate.

Of course, this is a very brief description of the process that you will need to undertake when using fibreglass for your flat roof, but with some expert guidance and hard work you will have a durable roof, and a potentially useful outdoor space. If you have decided that fibreglass is the best material for you house and you are looking for a roofer to complete the job for you, make sure that you ask about the different topcoats and resins – they are usually divided into standard and premium. And finally – really think about what you could do with the space fibreglass roofing creates for you; after all, the additional space could add real value to your home.

Joinery requires great skill, but there are tips that joiners can follow to ensure that their work is as error-free as possible. Here are some of the most useful.

Kitchen Installers Leeds / Sheffield Joiners / Edinburgh Joiner / Joiners in Glasgow

Identify where a joint doesn’t fit properly – However skilled a joiner is, there will be times where two pieces of wood just won’t want to fit together. This is usually the result of joints that haven’t been cut properly. An easy way to find out where the joinery is going wrong is to look for where the wood is ‘rubbing’ on the other piece. Usually, there will be a shiny spot on the wood which can then easily be sanded, chiselled or planed down to create a perfect fit.

How to fit shelves tightly into dados – For a perfect fit, a joiner should always cut the dado or groove that a shelf is going to fit into before they plane the wood. This means that the shelf’s thickness can easily be adjusted to form a snug fit into the dado or groove.

Dealing with oversized dowels – If a dowel is too large for the hole it’s meant to fit, a joiner can easily shrink it by ‘cooking’ the dowel in the microwave! This is particularly useful if you have a lot of dowels that won’t fit. Wood always holds a little bit of residual moisture, which will be drawn out by the heat of the microwave meaning that the dowels should just slot into place.

Small parts – Joinery can often mean dealing with parts that are simply too small to joint safely when using machinery. A joiner can use the jaws of a bench vise to grasp the handle of things such as a smoothing place or jointer. When these tools are grasped in an inverted position, the small part can be grasped and run over the blade.

Keep things clean – Much of joinery relies on sharp tools, and one of the quickest ways to blunt things is to allow dirt, grit and leftover shavings of wood to gather on the surfaces of boards. Surfaces can be kept clean by wiping dirt off regularly, and making sure that said surfaces have dried before work commences on them. If there are more embedded grits, a wire brush is often used to ensure cleanliness.

Creating really thin stock – Joinery often requires the use of super-thin stock and wood. But many planers are only able to handle a minimum thickness. A simple way to get round this is for a joiner to attach a piece of three-quarter inch thick wood to their existing wood using commercial-grade double-sided tape. This will fool the planer into thinking that the wood is thicker than it is, and will allow for the cutting of super-thin stock.

Prevent ‘tear-out’ – Joiners often have to use wood that isn’t very amenable to being cut. This can lead to ‘tear-out’, or jagged edges. A simple way for a joiner to prevent this is to wipe the board with a damp cloth prior to planing. This softens the wood fibres, and prevents jagged tears.
